Sages Bushland – A Conservation Journey at Sages Cottage Farm with my Father

Sages Bushland, a heritage-listed property over 100 years old, managed by Wallara (a charity supporting young people with disabilities), spans 37 acres, with a quarter preserved as native bushland and wetland.

For over 15 years, Gerard McDonald (my father) has volunteered in ecological restoration, initially working with the late environmentalist Ted Harris.

Supported by friend Dan Idczak from Landcare and botanist Dave Bainbridge, who calls the site a “gem,”— Gerard has helped transform the land from a weed-infested area to a haven for over 120 native plant species.

Despite this success, ongoing threats from invasive weeds highlight the urgent need for more volunteers and professional support to protect the area’s biodiversity.
